Wide open spaces, an abundance of natural resources and a relatively small population make Oamaru and the Waitaki District an ideal destination for anyone with a passion for eco tourism.

Our best known attraction is the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony and Visitor Centre located at Oamaru Harbour.

At the other side of the harbour headland, a colony of endangered yellow-eyed penguins can be watched from a viewing hide at Bushy Beach, a short, easy walk from the carpark.

Fur seals are also frequently seen along Oamaru beaches and at Moeraki.
